Dr. Vijay S. Patel is an Associate Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Medical College of Georgia (MCG), Augusta University. He holds departmental affiliations in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine and collaborates with the College of Nursing's Biobehavioral Nursing department. His clinical responsibilities include overseeing cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, and cardiovascular anesthesia programs.
Dr. Patel's education includes a MD from the University of Texas Health Science Center (1991), followed by general surgery residency at the same institution (1991–1998). He completed cardiothoracic surgery fellowships at Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center (1998–2000) and specialized training in robotic surgery, minimally invasive techniques, and thoracoscopic procedures at Duke University and Emory University. He is certified in thoracic surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and maintains active medical licenses in Georgia and North Carolina.
His research focuses on advanced surgical techniques including minimally invasive approaches, atrial fibrillation surgery, and cardiopulmonary transplantation. Recent publications emphasize ECMO protocols, paradoxical embolism management, and innovative surgical strategies for complex cases like ECMO-supported cesarean sections.
Dr. Patel has received recognition including the PHA Quality and Patient Safety Award (2016, 2014) and appears in Guide to America's Top Surgeons (2003, 2002). He actively participates in multidisciplinary initiatives such as the ECMO Committee, GRU Difficult Airway Team, and the Multidisciplinary Lung Cancer Program. Teaching responsibilities include courses like Basic Clerkship in Surgery and Thoracic & Cardiac Surgery Externship.
He is affiliated with departments across Augusta University, contributing to both clinical and academic advancement in cardiothoracic surgery.
