Victor Shoup is a Professor of Computer Science at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University. His research focuses on cryptography, algorithms, and computational number theory. He earned his Ph.D. (1989), M.S. (1985), and B.S. (1983) in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Shoup is renowned for developing the NTL library, a widely used C++ library for number theory and algebra, and co-authoring the textbook A Graduate Course in Applied Cryptography with Dan Boneh. He also created the PGFFT FFT library and contributed to the ISO 18033-2 public-key encryption standard. His work on A Computational Introduction to Number Theory and Algebra is a freely available textbook.
He received the ACM/SIGSAM Jenks Prize (2015) for his software engineering contributions to computer algebra. His academic leadership includes roles in software development, open-source projects like xbup (MacOS backup tools), and academic publications on algorithmic and cryptographic topics.
