Veronica Adams Yon

Veronica Adams Yon is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of English and Modern Languages at Florida A&M University (CSSAH). She holds a Ph.D. in African American Literature with a minor in Women’s Literature and Gender Studies from Florida State University (2000), and a B.A. in English from Spelman College (1989). As a scholar and administrator, her work spans academic leadership, writing program development, and mentorship through Alpha Kappa Mu (AKM) Honor Society.

Her research interests focus on African American Literature, American Literature, and Composition, with interdisciplinary connections to Gender Studies and Academic Writing. She has secured significant grants, including over $1.5 million in Title III funding for the Writing Resource Center (WRC) at FAMU, and has been recognized with awards like the Faculty Research Award and multiple Teacher of the Year honors.

As a leader in higher education, Yon has served as:

• Immediate Past President of Alpha Kappa Mu National Honor Society (2019-2023)
• National Public Relations Director, AKM (2013-2019, interim 2020-2022)
• Director of the Writing Resource Center at FAMU
• Advisor for the Kappa Iota (FAMU) chapter of AKM

Her professional activities include presentations at conferences such as the College Language Association, Conference on College Composition and Communication, and National Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing. She has also published in journals like Southern Discourse and Reflections, as well as contributing to reference works including The Greenwood Encyclopedia of African American Literature. Yon actively mentors students through AKM, supporting their research, graduate school applications, and community engagement initiatives.
