Vera McIlvain is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Biology Department at Syracuse University, with affiliations in Biotechnology. She holds a Ph.D. in Anatomy and Cell Biology from SUNY Upstate Medical University.
Her research examines cellular and molecular mechanisms of eye and brain development, muscle physiology, and sports medicine interventions. She investigates resistance exercise physiology, skeletal muscle growth mechanisms, and pharmacological agents affecting muscle development.
She has taught anatomy and physiology courses across diverse academic settings since 2011, employing varied pedagogical approaches to accommodate different learning styles. Her teaching innovations include HyFlex course models and inclusive STEM education strategies supported by CHANcE program grants.
She received the Laura J. and L. Douglas Meredith Teaching Recognition Award (2022) for teaching excellence and contributes to university initiatives as faculty advisor for Gift of Life and Phi Delta Epsilon.
