Vera Kälin is a Research Fellow at the Department of Computing Science, Umeå University, specializing in human-centered AI for participation- and activity-focused rehabilitation services. She is affiliated with the Interactive and Intelligent Systems research group led by Dr. Helena Lindgren.
- Education: PhD in Rehabilitation Science from the University of Illinois Chicago (Children’s Participation and Environment Research Lab under Dr. Mary Khetani)
Her research integrates AI and occupational therapy to develop tools like the Participation and Environment Measure (PEM) and CareCorpus, aiming to personalize pediatric rehabilitation through natural language processing and collaborative systems. Recent work explores ethical AI, clinical documentation simplification, and socially intelligent systems for stress management.
Vera's publications span journals like Frontiers in Pediatrics, Scandinavian Journal of Occupational Therapy, and conferences such as EMNLP and LREC-COLING, focusing on AI-driven participation metrics, caregiver strategy analysis, and adaptive rehabilitation technologies.
She is involved in projects like Collaborative Storytelling in Argument-Based Micro-Dialogues and Digital Companions as Social Actors, addressing both pediatric and adult disability support through AI.
