Venki Ramakrishnan is a Professor at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (University of Cambridge), specializing in the structural biology of the ribosome, a critical macromolecular machine responsible for translating genetic information into proteins. His work has elucidated ribosomal structures at key stages of the translation pathway, including interactions with antibiotics, mRNA, and tRNA.
- Research Focus: Translational initiation in bacteria and eukaryotes, eukaryotic translation termination, and ribosomal quality control mechanisms.
- Techniques: X-ray crystallography (past) and high-resolution cryo-electron microscopy (current).
- Applications: Implications in cancer, memory formation, and viral infections due to translational deregulation.
Recent Structural Work includes the 2020 determination of the human 48S translational initiation complex, the 2017 structure of the yeast mitochondrial ribosome, and critical insights into bacterial translation initiation dynamics (2016). These studies highlight his expertise in ribosomal structural transitions and ligand interactions.
Labs & Teams: Leads a research group at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, collaborating on mitochondrial ribosomes and eukaryotic translation mechanisms with colleagues such as A. Brown and A. Desai.
