Vaughn A. Booker is the George E. Doty, Jr. & Lee Spelman Doty Presidential Associate Professor of Africana Studies at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Arts & Sciences, Department of History. He previously served as Associate Professor of African & African American Studies and Religion at Dartmouth College. His research focuses on 20th-century African American religions, particularly practices that intertwine religious and racial identity formation.

- MA and PhD in Religion, Princeton University
Research interests include religious authority, Black spiritual memoirs, religion's role in the Civil Rights movement, and intersections of religion with popular music and comedy. His acclaimed book Lift Every Voice and Swing (2020) explores Black musicians' contributions to religious culture, earning the 2022 Gustave O. Arlt Award in the Humanities.
