Vasu Misra is a Professor of Meteorology in the Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science at Florida State University. His research focuses on climate variability, monsoons, extreme weather events, and numerical modeling. He has advised numerous PhD and Master’s students, directing dissertations on topics like tropical cyclones, monsoon dynamics, and climate prediction. His work integrates regional climate models, coupled ocean-atmosphere systems, and satellite data analysis to address questions of climate predictability and hydroclimatic change. Misra has contributed to improving seasonal forecasts for regions like Florida, India, and Central America, emphasizing the role of air-sea interactions and model parameterization. His research also explores future climate projections under changing conditions, including temperature and precipitation extremes.
Key research areas include monsoon onset/demise, tropical cyclone predictability, and the impacts of irrigation on regional climate. He has pioneered the use of GPM IMERG satellite data for probabilistic seasonal outlooks, enhancing understanding of climate teleconnections and extreme events. Misra’s extensive mentorship network reflects his commitment to training the next generation of climate scientists, with over 20 directed theses and dissertations since 2010. His work bridges theoretical climate dynamics with applied forecasting, contributing to actionable climate science for stakeholders in water resource management and disaster preparedness.
