Vassilis Syrmos

Vassilis Syrmos serves as Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and holds the administrative position of Associate Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education. Previously, he was Associate Dean of the College of Engineering and Interim Director of Science and Technology for the Research Corporation of the University of Hawaiʻi.

Education:

• Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, 1991

Research Interests: Dr. Syrmos specializes in geometric and algebraic approaches to linear system theory, computational algorithms for signal and image processing, robust/optimal filter design, and prognostics/diagnostics for condition-based maintenance systems. His medical imaging research demonstrates practical applications of theoretical control frameworks in healthcare contexts.

Research Funding and Advisory: His work has received continuous support from the National Science Foundation, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Office of Naval Research, Naval Air/Sea Systems Commands, The Boeing Company, Science Applications International Corporation, and Hawaiian Electric Company. He has consulted for the Canada France Hawaiʻi Telescope and Innovative Solutions, while serving on editorial boards including Circuits, Systems, and Signal Processing and numerous international conference committees.

Professional Affiliations: Dr. Syrmos maintains senior membership in IEEE, active participation in Sigma Xi research society, and board membership in the Hawaiʻi Technology Development Venture program.
