Varvara Yurievna Vedenina

Varvara Yurievna Vedenina is a Doctor of Biology and heads the Laboratory of Sensory Information Processing at the Institute for Information Transmission Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IITP RAS). Her research focuses on Orthoptera species, particularly Chorthippus grasshoppers, investigating acoustic communication, courtship behavior, hybridization, and speciation mechanisms.

• Education: Graduated from the Department of Entomology at Lomonosov Moscow State University (1987), where she completed coursework on acoustic signal recognition in locusts under Prof. R.D. Zhantiev and a diploma on cricket cercal interneurons under Doc. G.I. Rozhkova (IITP RAS).
• Academic Career: Has worked at IITP RAS since 1987, leading hybridization and speciation studies. Conducted international collaborations with institutions in Germany and Canada.
• Research Themes: Explores how courtship signals drive species isolation, hybrid viability, and neural mechanisms in acoustic behavior. Her work spans evolutionary biology, neuroethology, and molecular phylogenetics.
