Dr. Vartul Sangal is a Senior Lecturer in Cellular and Molecular Sciences at Northumbria University since 2016. He holds a PhD from the Max-Planck Institute for Infection Biology and completed postdoctoral research at the University of Strathclyde. His research focuses on bacterial genomics, microbial systematics, and pathogen virulence using computational and experimental approaches. Key interests include genome-based taxonomic classification, evolution of antibiotic resistance, and microbiome analysis in extreme environments. He collaborates internationally and has delivered invited talks at major conferences such as the 9th International Weigl Conference and the London Interdisciplinary Biosciences Consortium.
Dr. Sangal supervises postgraduate students including Esther Smith (asthma microbiome studies) and Megan Paterson (Rhodococcus equi molecular characterization). His work has led to novel bacterial species descriptions and contributed to resolving taxonomic disputes in prokaryotic systematics. Recent projects include analyzing Corynebacterium diphtheriae diversity and investigating environmental microbiomes during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Professional activities include editorial contributions to microbial journals and participation in global research networks. He received a Fellowship from the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) in 2016.
