Dr Vanessa Harbour is a Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader for Creative Writing and Creative and Professional Writing Degrees at the University of Winchester's School of Humanities. She earned her creative practice PhD from the same university in 2011, focusing on representations of sex, drugs, and alcohol in young adult fiction. Her research interests include historical fiction, writing for children and young adults, creativity, employability, and creative practice.
Publications include the middle-grade novel Flight (2018), which was longlisted for the Branford Boase Award and shortlisted for the Sheffield Children's Book Award. Its sequel Safe was published in 2022. She is currently writing The Accidental Agent, an adult historical novel set during World War II. Awards include Senior Fellow status from the Higher Education Academy and Full Membership in the Society of Authors.
Her academic work explores intersections of creative practice with employability, drawing on prior business experience. Notable articles include analyses of drug culture in literature and food studies in cultural contexts.
