Vandana Khungar

Vandana Khungar, MD, MSc, is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Yale School of Medicine, specializing in hepatology and gastroenterology with a focus on chronic liver diseases and liver transplantation. She holds key roles as the Vice-Chief for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Section of Digestive Diseases; Associate Medical Director of Liver Transplant; and Medical Director of Outpatient and Outreach Transplant Hepatology at the Yale New Haven Transplantation Center. Her work emphasizes reducing disparities in healthcare access and fostering patient-centered care.

Dr. Khungar’s education includes an MD from the University of Illinois at Chicago (2005), an MSc in Epidemiology from the University of Oxford (2001), and fellowships in Gastroenterology (UCLA, 2012) and Transplant Hepatology (Columbia University, 2013). She has received numerous awards, including the Overall Quality and Safety Award (2018) and the Maurice F. Attie Teaching Award (2017).

Her research spans implementation science, quality improvement, and digital health strategies to address disparities in liver disease care. Notable projects include developing telemedicine interventions for cirrhosis management and creating programs to reduce hospital readmissions post-liver transplant. She has contributed to national guidelines on reproductive health in liver disease and advocates for health equity through community outreach.

Dr. Khungar’s publications highlight advancements in liver transplantation, reproductive health considerations for liver patients, and microbiota analysis in alcohol-related cirrhosis. She actively engages in mentorship and educational initiatives to promote diversity in medicine.
