Dr. Vance Baird is a Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Horticulture at Michigan State University (MSU), holding this position since July 2009. Previously, he served on the faculty at Clemson University for 20 years, where he earned accolades such as the Alumni Distinguished Professor title and multiple Faculty Excellence Awards. He holds a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Virginia (1983), an M.S. in Botany from Miami University (1978), and a B.S. in Botany and Plant Pathology from Oregon State University (1976).
His research focuses on environmental stress tolerance in horticultural crops, nuclear genome organization, and gene expression dynamics. Notable contributions include developing molecular genetic maps for Prunus species and creating plant transformation vectors. His work is funded by USDA, NSF, and international agencies, with over 50 peer-reviewed publications and multiple book contributions.
As MSU's Department Chair, Dr. Baird strengthens ties between academia and industry, advocating for applied research and outreach. He leads initiatives through roles at the MSU Plant Biotechnology Resource and Outreach Center and the Institute of Agricultural Technology. Awards include the 2024 ASHS Outstanding Leadership Award and the Michigan Vegetable Council's Master Farmer Award.
