Van Nghiem

Van Nghiem is an Assistant Professor of Public Health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), affiliated with the School of Public Health's Health Policy & Organization department. He holds multiple roles including membership in the Sparkman Center for Global Health, Center for AIDS Research, O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, and other interdisciplinary research centers. His work focuses on health decision science, economic evaluation, and improving healthcare outcomes in resource-limited settings. Nghiem has expertise in modeling disease progression, cost-effectiveness analysis, and evaluating interventions targeting HIV prevention, cancer care, and maternal-child health. His research spans global health initiatives in Kenya, Vietnam, and Zambia, alongside domestic projects in Alabama addressing glaucoma screening, telemedicine, and childhood cancer survivorship. He teaches courses on clinical decision-making and outcomes measurement in public health programs.

Research Interests: Nghiem's work integrates decision science and economic evaluation to address gaps in healthcare delivery. Key areas include:

• Cost-effectiveness of HIV prevention strategies in vulnerable populations
• Telemedicine implementation for underserved communities
• Cancer treatment outcomes and clinical trial impact analysis
• Health disparities in chronic disease management
• Economic modeling of public health interventions

His recent studies examine risk behaviors among childhood cancer survivors, glaucoma screening via telemedicine, and cost analyses of HIV testing strategies in Kenya.

Grants & Collaborations: Engaged in multi-site collaborations including the SIGHT glaucoma screening initiative and global HIV prevention trials. His work is supported by NIH-funded projects and interdisciplinary centers at UAB.
