His research examines tactile expression, sequencing in media (rhythm, image, silence, montage), and ideological frameworks such as liberation/resistance, human rights, immigration, utopias/dystopias, and urban space. He applies these themes to Senegalese and sub-Saharan Francophone contexts, exploring Wolof language/culture, digital humanities in the global south, and cinematic analysis.
Van Kelly's recent publications reveal trends in postcolonial Francophone cinema, modern French poetry analysis, and comparative urban studies. His work frequently engages with authors like René Char, Jorge Semprun, and filmmakers such as Agnès Varda and Ousmane Sembene, reflecting a focus on political and cultural resistance across literary and cinematic forms.
As Director of Graduate Studies, Van Kelly oversees academic programs and advises graduate students. He co-edited special issues on activist filmmaking and literature between philosophy and history, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach to pedagogy and scholarship.
