Valter Scelsi is a Full Professor in the Department of Architecture and Design at the University of Genoa, serving as Rector's Delegate for the Valletta Puggia Campus and Territorial Facility Management Center. His teaching includes Design Laboratory 3, Architectural Theory, and Architecture Studio across undergraduate and master's programs in Architectural Sciences and Building Engineering.
His research centers on architectural atmospheres, urban composition, and the emotional/physiological impacts of built environments. He investigates how spatial configurations evoke priming effects and first impressions through integrated self-report and physiological measurements, with significant focus on heritage contexts like Genoa's Pammatone Complex. This interdisciplinary work bridges architecture, environmental psychology, and neuroscience to develop evidence-based design frameworks.
Recent publications demonstrate a clear trajectory toward neuroarchitectural methodologies, with increasing integration of physiological response metrics in atmospheric studies. Collaborative projects examine memory-atmosphere interactions in historical sites and emotional responses to spatial configurations, reflecting a shift from theoretical exploration toward empirical validation of atmospheric effects on human cognition and behavior.
Professor Scelsi maintains regular office hours by appointment at the Department of Architecture and Design, actively contributing to campus management while advancing research at the intersection of architectural theory and human-centered design.
