Valter Pinto's research is deeply rooted in the study of Modern Art History, with a particular focus on Renaissance painting in Sicily. He was introduced to periegetic literature by his mentor Andrea Emiliani, emphasizing the importance of direct comparison with artworks and critical engagement with historical sources. His early work culminated in the monograph Racconti di opere e racconti di uomini: La storiografia artistica a Napoli tra periegesi e biografia (1685–1700) (1997) and the critical edition of De Dominici’s biography of Luca Giordano (2008). His current research centers on reconstructing the artistic phenomena of early 16th-century Sicily, especially the work of painter Girolamo Alibrandi.
His research interests include: Renaissance Painting in Sicily, Southern Italian artistic historiography, Luca Giordano, problems of Leonardism in Sicily, and digital editions of historical art texts such as Susinno’s Vite de’ pittori messinesi. He has participated in and led several funded research projects, including studies on the Castello Ursino Civic Museum collections and the educational role of Girolamo Alibrandi.
