Valter Ferrero is an Associate Professor at Politecnico di Torino, specializing in optical communications and networking. His research focuses on high-speed passive optical networks (PON), coherent transmission systems, and metro-access convergence technologies. He has extensively explored topics such as 50G-PON, 400G coherent transmission, and TDEC metrics for optical transmitter characterization. His work integrates experimental demonstrations with theoretical analysis, often involving pre-commercial transceivers and real-world field trials. Ferrero’s contributions span fiber optic system design, signal processing, and network architecture optimization, with a particular emphasis on improving power budgets and reducing latency in next-generation telecom infrastructures.
Key areas of investigation include the convergence of metro and access networks using coherent technologies, the application of ROADMs in bidirectional transmission, and the development of polarization-insensitive receivers for PON systems. His research often addresses practical challenges such as non-linear compensation, chromatic dispersion management, and compatibility with existing standards like TWDM-PON and FABULOUS EU project frameworks. Ferrero has also contributed to interdisciplinary projects combining electronic design and photonics for advanced telecom solutions.
