Valter Ciocca is a Professor at the School of Audiology & Speech Sciences, University of British Columbia (UBC), with a career spanning auditory perception, speech science, and communication disorders. He joined UBC in 2007 after roles at Hong Kong University and research training at the University of Sussex.
- Education:
- Laurea in Experimental Psychology, University of Padua (1984)
- M.A. in Psychology, McGill University (1985)
- Ph.D. in Psychology, McGill University (1988)
His research focuses on auditory scene analysis, lexical tone perception in tonal languages like Cantonese, speech production in populations with cerebral palsy and cochlear implants, and acoustic correlates of speech disorders. Publications highlight interdisciplinary work bridging linguistics, acoustics, and neuroscience.
Recent work explores phonemic restoration, noise thresholds in harmonic masking, and phonological development in French-speaking children. His lab applies auditory perception principles to clinical populations, emphasizing pitch processing and prosody.
At UBC, he led the School of Audiology & Speech Sciences from 2007–2017 and contributes to teaching and research on speech motor control, auditory feedback, and problem-based learning in speech-language pathology education.
He utilizes advanced acoustic analysis techniques to study vowel production post-glossectomy, hypernasality measurement, and tonal normalization in speech disorders.
