Valerie Margrain is an Adjunct Professor at Victoria University, Australia, and holds academic affiliations with Karlstad University's Centre for Child and Childhood Studies (UBB) and the Centre for Research on the Mental Health and Life Circumstances of Children and Youth (CBU). She leads a major SEK 39.5 million doctoral program in gifted education, a collaboration between Karlstad, Stockholm, and Mälardalen universities. Her research focuses on gifted education, early childhood inclusion, intercultural practices, and policy analysis. Valerie contributes to preschool teacher education programs at Karlstad University, emphasizing international perspectives and diversity.
Education background: Valerie completed her education in New Zealand, worked in primary and early childhood education, and held roles at The Open Polytechnic of NZ and Massey University. She later worked in Australia before joining Karlstad University in 2018. She has extensive experience in editorial roles, including serving on the boards of APEx and Kairaranga, and co-founded the giftEDnz early childhood special interest group.
Her research emphasizes lived experiences of diverse children and teacher support. She coordinates the Nordic Network for Gifted Education (NNGE) and collaborates internationally through networks like NERA. Valerie has supervised 15 doctoral students and secured significant research funding. Her work bridges policy, pedagogy, and internationalisation, addressing systemic gaps in recognizing giftedness and fostering inclusive educational environments.
