معرفی
Dr. Valerie Biousse serves as Professor of Ophthalmology and Neurology at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, holding the Reunette Harris Chair of Ophthalmologic Research. She concurrently acts as Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and directs the Neuro-Ophthalmology Fellowship program within the Department of Ophthalmology, demonstrating significant institutional leadership across clinical, academic, and administrative domains.
Her research program centers on neuro-ophthalmic disorders with particular emphasis on optic neuropathies including Leber Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON) and intracranial hypertension syndromes. She pioneers translational investigations into gene therapy interventions for mitochondrial optic neuropathies while developing innovative diagnostic methodologies such as non-mydriatic fundus imaging for emergency department applications. Her work bridges ophthalmology, neurology, and emergency medicine to address critical gaps in visual pathway disease management.
Analysis of her 2025 publications reveals three dominant research trajectories: longitudinal assessment of lenadogene nolparvovec gene therapy for LHON, refinement of papilledema diagnostic protocols using point-of-care imaging, and molecular characterization of optic nerve pathology following experimental therapies. These studies consistently integrate clinical neuro-ophthalmology with advanced imaging and genetic approaches, establishing new standards for both acute and chronic optic nerve disorder management.
Honors:
- Reunette Harris Chair of Ophthalmologic Research
As Neuro-Ophthalmology Fellowship Director, Dr. Biousse oversees comprehensive subspecialty training while mentoring emerging clinicians in diagnostic techniques and research methodology. Her leadership extends to editorial roles including Specialty Chief Editor for Neuro-Ophthalmology at Frontiers in Neurology, where she shapes scholarly discourse in the field through rigorous peer review and topical curation.
