Valerie Accetta

Valerie Accetta serves as Head of Musical Theatre and Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), within the College of Arts and Sciences. She holds a B.A. in Musical Theatre Pedagogy from Otterbein University and an MFA in Theatre Pedagogy from Virginia Commonwealth University. Her expertise spans musical theatre performance, voice training (as an Estill Master Trainer), and directorial work across international and regional productions.

Her professional credits include directing Godspell (Edinburgh Fringe Festival), Gypsy, The Producers, and Matilda, alongside Equity performances in State Fair, Cinderella, and The Sound of Music. She maintains active involvement in theatre education through publications in Studies in Musical Theatre and Voice and Speech Review, and contributions to The Voice Teacher’s Cookbook. Valerie also presents at conferences such as the Association for Theatre in Higher Education and Estill International Symposium.

Teaching responsibilities include Musical Theatre Performance, Showcase, and History courses. Her work combines scholarly research with practical application in voice pedagogy, performance training, and curriculum development.
