Valentyna Kharkhun is a Professor at Nizhyn Mykola Gogol State University (Ukraine) and currently serves as a Researcher at the School of Humanities, Tallinn University (Estonia). Her expertise focuses on the intersection of ideology and culture, particularly Ukrainian modernist literature, Soviet cultural policies, and memory politics in museums. She holds a habilitation PhD (2011) in Theory of Literature from the Shevchenko Institute of Literature, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
Her research encompasses the socialist realist canon in Ukrainian and Russian literatures, representation of communism in Central/Eastern European museums, and the role of literature in ideological frameworks. Key contributions include two award-winning books and over 100 articles in journals like Nationalities Papers, Canadian Slavonic Papers, and Journal of Soviet and Post-Soviet Politics and Society.
Recent work emphasizes Ukrainian historical memory through museums (e.g., Bykivnia memorial landscape) and re-examines Soviet-era narratives in literature and cultural institutions. Her 2010 Book of the Year Prize recognized her scholarly contributions to Ukrainian literary studies.
