Dr. Valentin Walther is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Chemistry and Physics and Astronomy at Purdue University. His research focuses on quantum optics, quantum mechanics, and condensed matter physics, with a particular emphasis on manipulating photons, Rydberg states, and semiconductor excitons. He holds a Ph.D. from the Max-Planck-Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems and the University of Aarhus, followed by postdoctoral work at Harvard University's ITAMP. His lab collaborates widely, including with Harvard, TU Dortmund, and others.
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Frankfurt, Germany
- Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from Max-Planck-Institute (Dresden) and University of Aarhus (Denmark)
- Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University's ITAMP
Research Interests: Dr. Walther explores quantum light manipulation, Rydberg states in atoms and semiconductors, and their applications in quantum computing, metrology, and optics. His group investigates photon correlations, polaritons, and semiconductor purification techniques. Recent work includes NSF-funded AMO theory projects and studies in driven-dissipative systems.
Awards:
- NSF grant from the PHYS-AMO Theory section (2024)
Group & Collaborations: His team includes postdocs and graduate students focusing on Rydberg physics, semiconductor optoelectronics, and quantum control. Notable collaborations involve Harvard's Lukin group, TU Dortmund's semiconductor team, and the MPQ's Bloch group. Group activities emphasize weekly meetings and participation in national conferences.
Labs & Facilities: Based at Purdue's Wetherill Laboratory of Chemistry, his lab leverages advanced theoretical tools and experimental partnerships to study quantum phenomena in condensed matter and atomic systems.
