Dr. Valentin Radu is a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Sheffield's School of Computer Science, affiliated with the Pervasive Computing research group. He leads the Ubiquitous AI Lab and focuses on edge AI systems, distributed machine learning, and mobile sensing. Previously, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Edinburgh and contributed to the EU-funded Bonseyes project.
Education: PhD in Intelligent Systems (University of Edinburgh, 2017), with research visits to the University of Cambridge, Intel R&D Ireland, and Samsung. His work spans multimodal deep learning, federated learning, and efficient neural network optimization for edge devices.
- Research highlights: MM-Fit dataset for exercise logging, federated learning with attention transfer, and sensor-fusion for location tracking.
- Awards: Supervised the Best Thesis Award recipient (David Strömbäck).
- Memberships: HiPEAC (European computing systems excellence center) and Insigneo Institute for in silico Medicine.
His lab explores edge AI applications, with recent projects addressing system heterogeneity in federated learning and cross-sensor modalities for ubiquitous computing.
