Vaidehi Ramanathan is a Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of California, Davis. Her research spans language policies, sociolinguistics, health communication (particularly Alzheimer's discourse and medical consultations), refugee resettlement, and citizenship studies. She holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Southern California (1994), an M.A. in Linguistics from California State University, Northridge (1989), an M.A. in English Literature from the University of Baroda, India (1987), and a B.A. from St. Xavier’s College, Ahmedabad (1985).
Her research integrates qualitative sociolinguistics with critical analysis of language in policy, health, and migration contexts. Key interests include:
- How language policies regulate minority languages and impact behavior.
- Sociopolitical dimensions of second language acquisition.
- Discourses of health institutions and caregiver narratives.
- Linguistic barriers in refugee resettlement and citizenship processes.
Her publications reflect interdisciplinary engagement, merging linguistic analysis with mathematics (graph theory, ring theory) and health sciences (neuropharmacology, pain communication). Recent articles explore medical consultations on opioids, Alzheimer's narratives, and combinatorial algebra, indicating collaborations across STEM fields.
