V. Sara Thoi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Johns Hopkins University, where she leads a research group focused on inorganic and materials chemistry for energy storage and conversion. Her work bridges fundamental molecular understanding with practical applications in batteries, fuel cells, and catalysis.
Her research interests include the development of porous materials such as metal and covalent organic frameworks (MOFs/COFs) for use in lithium-sulfur batteries, as well as molecular and heterogeneous catalysis for transforming small molecules like CO₂ and protons into sustainable fuels and chemicals. Her lab emphasizes ion transport, molecular design, and interfacial engineering to enhance device performance.
Recent publications highlight her group’s work on hybrid quantum dot/MOF systems for charge transfer and functionalized carbon nanotubes as cathode additives, demonstrating a strong trend toward advanced materials for next-generation batteries and energy conversion technologies.
She has been recognized with several prestigious awards:
- NSF CAREER Award
- DOE Early Career Award
- Scialog Fellow in Advanced Energy Storage
- ACS Division of Inorganic Chemistry Young Investigator Award
Dr. Thoi mentors graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, securing competitive grants to support her innovative research. Her lab is part of JHU’s broader energy research ecosystem, including collaborations with institutes focused on sustainable energy solutions. She maintains an active research presence through publications, lab outreach, and scholarly engagement.
