Wagschal's research centers on comparative public policy analysis, with emphasis on direct democracy mechanisms, fiscal policy across political systems, and conflict research. His work integrates quantitative methods with comparative institutional analysis, particularly examining German political systems within international contexts. Recent projects focus on televised political debates using machine learning and emotional response analysis, as well as pandemic policy acceptance dynamics.
His publication trends reveal consistent focus on German federalism and electoral behavior since 2015, with increasing emphasis on digital political communication tools (Debat-O-Meter) and crisis governance. The 2020-2023 period shows significant output on pandemic-related political trust and emotional responses in electoral contexts, reflecting adaptive research priorities during global crises.
As Editor of Statistics, Politics and Policy since 2016, he has shaped scholarly discourse in quantitative political methodology. His research collaborations span multiple German institutions including the Arnold Bergstraesser Institute and State Center for Political Education.
Wagschal leads the 'Policy Panel Germany' research project and has developed innovative tools like the Debat-O-Meter for real-time analysis of political communication. His current work involves citizen participation mechanisms in Baden-Württemberg municipalities and analysis of the 2021 federal election dynamics.
