Dr. Urmee Chakma is a Lecturer in Humanities and Pedagogy in the School of Education at La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia. She joined La Trobe University on August 29, 2022, after serving as a Teaching Associate and Research Assistant at Monash University's Faculty of Education from 2018 to 2022. A member of the Indigenous Chakma community from Bangladesh, Dr. Chakma has been living in Australia since 2000 and brings her unique perspective to her academic work focused on issues of citizenship, equity, and social justice for marginalized communities.

Dr. Chakma's monograph, "Empowering Subaltern Voices through Education: The Chakma Diaspora in Australia" (Routledge), explores education as a site of resistance and identity negotiation for an Indigenous diaspora. She is currently researching the experiences of culturally and linguistically diverse academics and HDR students in higher education, assessment practices, refugee-background family engagement, and the structural limits of school inclusion in rural Victoria.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong focus on Indigenous education, critical pedagogy, and social justice. Her work spans multiple contexts including Australia, Bangladesh, and Vietnam, with particular attention to the Chakma Indigenous community in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
