Unique Shaw-Dismuke

Unique Shaw-Dismuke (known as Dr. U) is a Lecturer in Sociology at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. She holds a PhD in Sociology and identifies as a black mother, teacher, healer, scholar, and activist.

Her work focuses on deconstructing narratives and labeling processes to re-humanize marginalized groups. She employs critical analysis of social definitions, ideologies, and perceptions to foster inclusive spaces for examining power dynamics and biases. Her pedagogy emphasizes intersectional approaches to race, crime, justice, and dehumanization theory.

Awards recognizing her contributions include Cal Poly's Significant Contribution Award for Community Service (2019) and President's Diversity Award (2016).
