Umut Baysan is a Departmental Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Oxford's Faculty of Philosophy and a member of St Anne's College. Previously, he held positions at Merton College (2019-2022) and the University of Glasgow (2014-2017 as University Teacher and Postdoctoral Researcher). He earned his PhD in Philosophy from the University of Glasgow (2015) and earlier degrees from Middle East Technical University (BSc in Philosophy, 2008; BSc in Cognitive Science, 2011).
His research focuses on metaphysics, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of science, particularly inter-level metaphysics, emergence theories, mental causation debates, and epiphenomenalism. He also explores practical ethics (social justice), meta-ethics (naturalism/non-naturalism), epistemology (epistemic justification), and philosophy of cognitive science (group cognition).
His recent publications analyze topics like one-level physicalism, disjunctive accounts of physicalism/anti-physicalism, and causal emergence. His work often bridges metaphysical frameworks with empirical sciences, emphasizing debates around reductionism and emergence.
Baysan teaches undergraduate tutorials in Moral Philosophy, Epistemology, Philosophy of Mind, and Practical Ethics, and delivers lectures on Practical Ethics (since 2019). He supervises undergraduate and graduate students in philosophy, including acting as a secondary supervisor for DPhil candidates. His teaching extends to graduate courses on emergence (2019) and ethics (forthcoming).
