Dr. Uma Athale is a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at McMaster University's Faculty of Health Sciences and serves as a Consultant for both McMaster Children's Hospital and Hamilton Health Sciences. With over two decades of experience since joining McMaster University in 2001, Dr. Athale has established herself as a leading expert in pediatric hematology and oncology, particularly in the areas of leukemia/lymphoma and hemoglobinopathy.
Dr. Athale completed her MBBS and MD (pediatrics) from the University of Bombay (now Mumbai University) before working for six years at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia. She then pursued a fellowship in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, which prepared her for her current role at McMaster University.
Dr. Athale's research program focuses on the epidemiology and treatment of acute leukemia, outcome measures and supportive care in pediatric oncology, with particular emphasis on thrombosis in children with cancer. Her work spans both clinical and translational domains, with recent studies examining obesity's impact on cancer outcomes, bone toxicities in leukemia treatment, and thromboembolism risk factors. She has initiated and developed the hemoglobinopathy program at McMaster Children's Hospital and maintains strong international collaborations, particularly with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, where she serves as a Consultant for Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Programs in Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Analysis of Dr. Athale's recent publications reveals a strong focus on clinical outcomes in pediatric leukemia, with particular attention to risk factors such as obesity, thrombosis, and bone health complications. Her work often leverages large population-based datasets from Canada and international collaborations, demonstrating her commitment to evidence-based approaches in pediatric oncology. The interdisciplinary nature of her research connects hematology, oncology, epidemiology, and global health, with significant contributions to understanding treatment complications and optimizing care for children with cancer.
Dr. Athale has been actively involved in mentoring and training the next generation of pediatric hematologists and oncologists. Her international collaborations have facilitated educational resource development in sub-Saharan Africa, reflecting her commitment to global health equity. She has contributed to the development of clinical guidelines for managing pediatric chronic myeloid leukemia and has participated in numerous multi-center clinical trials through the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute ALL Consortium.
Dr. Athale leads the hemoglobinopathy program at McMaster Children's Hospital, which has established a model for seamless transition of care from pediatric to adult services. Through her international work with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, she has helped develop pediatric hematology/oncology programs in Zambia and Zimbabwe, focusing on creating sustainable educational resources. Her research team frequently collaborates with the Cancer in Young People in Canada (CYP-C) consortium and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute ALL Consortium, contributing to large-scale studies that inform clinical practice in pediatric oncology.
