Ulrike Pröbstl-Haider is a full Professor at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU), working in the Institute of Landscape Development, Recreation and Conservation Planning within the Department of Landscape, Water and Infrastructure. With over 30 years of academic experience, she has established herself as a leading expert in tourism planning, climate change adaptation in tourism, and sustainable landscape development.
Her research interests span tourism planning, climate change adaptation strategies, environmental assessment procedures, species protection, and behavioral economics applications through choice experiments. She has led numerous research projects focusing on nature-based solutions, sustainable tourism development, and climate change impacts on outdoor recreation and tourism infrastructure, particularly in alpine regions. Her work often integrates social science perspectives with environmental planning to develop practical solutions for sustainable tourism and landscape management.
Professor Pröbstl-Haider's publication record is extensive, with over 300 publications including recent work on ski resort sustainability, nature-based solutions in urban areas, climate change impacts on tourism attractions, and the acceptance of green infrastructure across European cities. Her research demonstrates a consistent focus on practical applications of sustainability principles in tourism and landscape planning contexts.
Among her notable recognitions are the FEMTech Expert of the Month award (2007), nomination for the ÖGUt Environmental Prize (2007), and the BDLA Prize (1991). She has also contributed significantly to knowledge transfer through 110 publications aimed at societal impact, including policy reports and popular science articles.
Her current research activities include leading projects such as 'Regional resilience based on ecological, economic and social knowledge and innovation in the Ötscher region' (2023-2025) and 'Upsurge City center approach to catalyze nature based solutions through EU generated urban lighthouse' (2021-2026), demonstrating her ongoing commitment to addressing contemporary challenges in sustainable landscape and tourism development.
