Ulrike Felt is Professor at the Department of Science and Technology Studies within the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Vienna. She previously served as Head of Department from 2004-2014 and again from 2018-2024, and as Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences from 2014-2018. She currently leads the ERC Advanced Grant project "Innovation Residues: Modes and Infrastructures of Caring for our Longue-durée Environmental Futures" (2022-2027) and is a member of the research platforms "Governance of Digital Practices" and "PLENTY - Plastics in the Environment and Society," as well as part of the Management Board of the "Environment and Climate Hub" at the University of Vienna.
Her research spans several interconnected areas:
- Innovations and their societal residues (nuclear, microplastics, digitalization)
- Participation and governance of science/technology in democratic societies
- Science communication and changes in knowledge production regimes
- Temporal dimensions of research and science-society relations
- Socio-technical infrastructures and their societal significance
Her recent publications reveal a growing interest in the temporal aspects of academic research, examining how time pressures, rhythms, and expectations shape scholarly work. She also continues to explore environmental issues, particularly microplastics, and digital transformations in society. Her work consistently bridges theoretical insights with practical implications for research policy and governance.
Among her notable scientific awards:
- UNIVIE Teaching Award (2014)
- Ars Docendi State Prize for excellent teaching (2015)
- Ziman Award of the European Association for the Study of Science and Technology (2014)
Professor Felt has extensive experience supervising Master's and doctoral students through dedicated thesis seminars and research colloquia. She has led significant research projects including BBMRI.AT #2, FutureArctic, Citizen-centred EU-EHR Xchange, and ICU4Covid. She played a key role in developing the Master's programme "Science-Technology-Society" at the University of Vienna.
She actively participates in several research groups including the "Environment and Climate Hub" and research platforms on digital practices and plastics in society, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration across scientific domains.
