Ulrich Schaffrath serves as an Adjunct Professor and Academic Director at the Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology (Biology 3) at RWTH Aachen University. He leads the Schaffrath Lab, also known as the RiBa-Lab (rice-barley-lab), which is located in the collective building Biology 1, A-Wing, third floor, rooms 351 to 354.
Professor Schaffrath's research focuses on understanding how plants endure and overcome stress through molecular-level analysis of cellular processes. His work contributes significantly to sustainable agricultural practices and aligns with RWTH Aachen University's overarching objective of 'Meeting global challenges.'
The Schaffrath Lab specializes in studying fungal plant pathogens that cause economically important diseases on rice, barley and soybean. Their mission is to develop tools for creating improved crop plants capable of withstanding diseases, ultimately helping to feed a growing human population. The lab participates in several research projects including DURESTrit, monocotJacalins, Asian Soybean Rust, ProCroPs, aqua.protect, PlaMint, and PrimACs.
Professor Schaffrath's research group receives funding from multiple organizations including the German Research Foundation, Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Federal Office for Agriculture and Food, The Ministry for Environment, Agriculture, Conservation and Consumer Protection of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, as well as industry partners like Syngenta and LemnaTec.
At the Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology, Professor Schaffrath is committed to empowering students and early-career researchers through curiosity and inquiry-based learning experiences in plant biology. He aims to cultivate expertise in molecular plant physiology, biochemistry, and computational systems biology among his students and research staff.
