Dr. Ulrich Lau is a researcher affiliated with the University of Hamburg, associated with the Center for Security and Peace Research (CSMC) and the Collaborative Research Center (SFB). His work focuses on the intersection of legal history, ancient law, and manuscript analysis, particularly in the context of early Chinese imperial legislation.
As Principal Investigator (2016–2019), he led the project on Qin dynasty legal ordinances, building on his prior role as Research Associate (2011–2015) for the Legal Manuscripts of the Qin project. His research bridges historical jurisprudence and textual analysis of ancient documents.
He published a critical annotated translation of Qin criminal cases from the Yuelu Academy Collection in 2016, contributing to the understanding of early Chinese legal systems. His achievements include the J. P. Gumbert Dissertation Award, recognizing excellence in manuscript studies.
