Uisdean Nicholson is an Associate Professor of Geoscience at Heriot-Watt University, leading the Seis-Strat-Sed Research Group and directing the MSc in Subsurface Energy Systems. He holds dual affiliations with the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society and the Institute for GeoEnergy Engineering. Previously, he worked at Shell E&P (2009–2016) and completed his PhD at the University of Aberdeen (2009), focusing on tectonic-sedimentary interactions at transform margins.
His research spans Earth hazards (asteroid impacts, submarine landslides), marine geology (ocean gateways, contourite systems), and geoenergy (CCS, geothermal energy). He has secured ~£1M in grants from UKRI, GCRF, and industry, publishing 20+ peer-reviewed papers. Notably, his team was shortlisted for the PRIME Awards (2022, 2024) and media-covered work has featured in BBC, National Geographic, and New Scientist. He serves on the European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling (ESSAC) and previously on the IODP Science Evaluation Panel.
His lab manages 4 postdocs, 7 PhD students, and 20+ MSc students, advancing projects in seismic stratigraphy, subduction zone dynamics, and sustainable energy solutions. His Gaelic radio appearances highlight his outreach in Earth sciences.
