Ugur Dogrusoz is a Professor in the Department of Computer Engineering at Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey, and Head of the i-Vis Research Lab. He joined Bilkent in 1998 after completing his PhD in Computer Science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in 1995. His research focuses on big data visualization, bioinformatics, graph algorithms, and machine learning applications in network analysis.
Education:
- B.S. in Computer Engineering (1989), Middle East Technical University (Ankara, Turkey)
- M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science (1991, 1995), Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Troy, NY, USA)
Research Interests: Dogrusoz’s work spans biological pathway visualization (e.g., SBGN standard), cancer genomics tools (cBioPortal), fraud detection in telecom/financial networks (Hydra), and open-source graph visualization frameworks like Newt and Chisio. He leads interdisciplinary projects such as the i-Vis Lab’s collaboration with Amazon for cloud workload visualization and the development of the SBGN standard for systems biology.
Key Contributions:
- Co-founder and Director of the Bilkent Center for Bioinformatics (BCBI, 2002–2010)
- Contributed to the Systems Biology Graphical Notation (SBGN) standard
- Developed tools like Newt, PathwayMapper, and Cytoscape.js
Recognition:
- National Young Scientist Career Development Award (TUBITAK, 2005–2011)
- Recipient of TigerGraph Graphathon 1st Place Award (via i-Vis Lab member)
Teaching: Current courses include Algorithms & Programming I, Fundamentals of Algorithms II, and Algorithms I.
Labs & Teams: Directs the i-Vis Research Lab and collaborates with institutions like Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (cBioPortal) and Amazon (AWS visualization tools).
