Ugonna Okegwo

Ugonna Okegwo is a Lecturer in Jazz Studies at Purchase College's Conservatory of Music. A globally acclaimed jazz bassist, he is celebrated for his rich tone, stylistic range, and innovative fusion of jazz, funk, and classical music. His career spans collaborations with legends like Clark Terry, Tom Harrell, and Wayne Escoffery, while leading his own quartet and quintet projects.

• Education: BFA from Long Island University

Okegwo’s research interests revolve around jazz bass techniques, musical hybridity, and improvisational dynamics. His work bridges traditional jazz with African, funk, and classical influences, creating a distinctive sound recognized for its articulation and timing.

Professional Highlights: Performed at iconic venues like the Village Gate, recorded the album UOniverse (2002), and toured internationally with artists such as Lou Blackburn, Joe Newman, and Tom Harrell since 1997.
