Tzer Han Tan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). His research focuses on understanding nonequilibrium forces in living matter, exploring how biological systems convert molecular energy into organized motion and emergent structures. He leads the Active & Living Matter Lab, which combines experimental biophysics, quantitative imaging, and theoretical collaboration to study symmetry, dynamics, and self-organization in systems like marine embryos and organoids.
His work integrates concepts from active matter, nonlinear dynamics, and out-of-equilibrium statistical mechanics. Current research directions include chiral active matter, nonreciprocal robotics, and chiral morphogenesis in marine embryos. The lab is part of UCSD's Biological Physics division, offering interdisciplinary collaboration opportunities within a top-ranked biophysics program.
Recent studies highlight topics such as emergent chirality in organoids, odd dynamics in living crystals, and topological turbulence in cellular membranes.
