Tyson Murphy is Director of Mountain Challenge and adjunct faculty at Maryville College's Mountain Challenge/Fit.Green.Happy department. He earned a Bachelor's in Outdoor Recreation and Environmental Studies from Maryville College (2003) and a Master's in Human Resource Development from University of Tennessee's Haslam College of Business (2007). Previously serving 17 years as Head Cross Country Coach and Program Manager, he assumed directorship in June 2023.
His academic focus connects outdoor experiences with human development. Research interests include:
- Nature-based community building
- Experiential education methodologies
- Sustainable recreation programming
- Leadership development through adventure
He contributes to institutional governance through the Maryville College Woods Advising Committee and supports student development as faculty representative for Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
