Tuomo Hiippala is a Professor at the University of Helsinki, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts, Department of Languages, and the English Philology unit. He is also associated with the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS) and the Helsinki Institute of Urban and Regional Studies (Urbaria).

Hiippala’s research focuses on multimodality—how modes like language, diagrams, and social media interact in communication. He explores applications of artificial intelligence in multimodality research and vice versa, as well as natural language processing and computer vision in the humanities.
His recent publications analyze multimodal meaning-making in diagrams, urban linguistic landscapes, and AI-driven social media studies. Notable projects include FOUNDATIONS (ERC-funded, 2024–2029) and CROWDINFRA (2023–2028), addressing crowdsourcing ethics.
