Tung T. Nguyen, MD, is a Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine, and the inaugural Associate Vice Chancellor for Research – Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Anti-Racism (IDEA). He leads UCSF’s efforts to embed diversity, equity, and anti-racism into the research enterprise, collaborating with deans and the Office of Diversity and Outreach. Dr. Nguyen’s academic career spans over three decades, with roles including director of CTSI’s Research Action Group for Equity (RAGE) and co-PI of NIH-funded initiatives like SF BUILD, aimed at diversifying the health research workforce.
His research focuses on reducing health disparities in underserved populations, particularly Asian American communities. Notable projects include interventions to improve colorectal cancer screening in Vietnamese Americans and leveraging lay health workers to address disparities. He has held leadership positions at the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and contributed to national networks like AANCART.
Dr. Nguyen’s educational background includes a BA in Philosophy from Harvard, an MD from Stanford, and residency training at UCSF. He is a 2019 Chancellor’s MLK Leadership Award recipient. His grants span NIH funding areas from 2000 to present, emphasizing community-centered approaches to health equity.
