Dr. Tunde Kovacs is an Associate Professor of Finance at the Manning School of Business, University of Massachusetts Lowell. She joined UMass Lowell in 2013 after seven years at Northeastern University. As the coordinator of the Ph.D. concentration in finance, she focuses on mentoring doctoral students and staying current in financial research. Her academic journey includes a bachelor’s and MBA from Corvinus University in Budapest, followed by a Ph.D. from Virginia Tech in 2006. She is actively involved in teaching undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral courses, emphasizing the importance of understanding financial jargon and critical analysis of financial publications.
Dr. Kovacs earned a BS in Business Administration (1997) and an MBA in Finance (1999) from Corvinus University in Budapest, Hungary. She also holds a Ph.D. in Finance from Virginia Tech (2006). Additionally, she completed a Certificate of Graduate Business Studies from Corvinus University and the University of Passau (1998).
Her research focuses on financial markets, market efficiency, and the impact of social media on corporate valuation. Key areas include:
- Information assimilation in financial markets
- Analyst recommendations and their influence
- Post-earnings announcement drift phenomena
- Social media’s role in investor relations
- Shareholder rights and equity issuance costs
Dr. Kovacs has received several accolades for her teaching and research, including:
- 2015 Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence (UMass Lowell)
- Excellence in Teaching Award (Northeastern University, 2012)
- Riesman Research Professor (Northeastern University, 2012)
- Technical Associates Award for Outstanding PhD Student (2005 and 2003)
She teaches courses in the Pulichino Tong Business Center’s Trading Room, utilizing Bloomberg, Morningstar, and FactSet tools. Her advising includes mentoring Ph.D. students like Yi (Shirley) Shen and former students who have joined firms like Cox Capital Management. She also supports the Finance Society, which has grown to nearly 60 members under her guidance.
Dr. Kovacs collaborates with colleagues on research projects, including studies on CEO connections and equity costs, as well as the impact of climate adaptation plans on corporate finance. Her work often involves interdisciplinary approaches, such as analyzing social media’s role in corporate valuation.
