Dr. Tumay Tunur is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology at California State University San Marcos (CSUSM), where she has been a faculty member since 2017. She directs the Movement in eXtended Reality (MiXR) Lab, focusing on the sustainable integration of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) systems for motor and cognitive rehabilitation in older adults, particularly those with Parkinson’s disease. Her work bridges technology, kinesiology, and clinical applications, with a strong emphasis on improving balance and mobility through innovative interventions.
- Postdoctoral Fellow in Exercise Science (2015-2017) and Neuroscience (2012-2015), Syracuse University
- Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology (Neuroscience), Tulane University (2011)
Dr. Tunur’s research explores how VR and AR technologies can enhance rehabilitation outcomes. Her MiXR Lab investigates the effects of cognitive and motor load in VR tasks, virtual environments on balance, and the use of locomotion platforms like the Virtualizer for VR-based training. She has developed AR/VR applications for dual-task training in older adults and dance interventions for Parkinson’s patients, analyzing cognitive load and feasibility of wearable technologies.
Dr. Tunur actively mentors undergraduate and graduate students in research and teaches courses such as Motor Control and Learning, Exercise Fitness and Health, and Movement Pedagogy. She advocates for student recruitment into AR/VR research and has presented at conferences like the Game Developers Conference and International Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders.
As a Faculty Center Fellow for Diversity, Inclusion, and Social Justice at CSUSM, she contributes to curriculum assessment and program development, including initiatives like the Summer Research Internship for African-American High School Students. She has served on committees such as the CEHHS Committee of Inclusion, Diversity, and Equality and the President's Council for the Office of Inclusive Excellence.
