Tuliza Sindi is a Burundian-South African architect, educator, researcher, and curator at Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Architecture, where she holds the Ann Kalla Professorship (2023-2025). She serves as Curator of Public Programs and Director of Publications, fostering critical dialogues on decolonial spatial practices. Previously, she founded Unit 19 at the University of Johannesburg’s Graduate School of Architecture (2020-2022), promoting innovative design methodologies.
Her research focuses on spatial politics, alternative cosmologies, and decolonial urbanism, exemplified by her cross-disciplinary collective room19isaFactory, which explores 'Unreasonable Architecture.' Key projects include installations in Johannesburg, Accra, and Malmö, alongside editorial contributions like her forthcoming book Inventory of Unreasonable Wallmaking (2025).
Awardees include the Graham Foundation grant for the 'her(e); otherwise' platform and recognition as one of Africa’s 50 most influential female architects. Her work interrogates modernist frameworks, advocating for societal transformation through alternative knowledge systems.
