Tsuyoshi Hirata is a Rudolf Diesel Industry Fellow at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), hosted by Prof. Johann Plank. He is affiliated with Nippon Shokubai Co., where he has specialized in polymer research for construction materials since 1981. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. from Hokkaido University (2010), focusing on polycarboxylate-type superplasticizers for concrete.
Education: B.S. and M.S. in Chemistry from Nagoya Institute of Technology (1979–1981), Ph.D. from Hokkaido University (2010).
Research focuses on polymer synthesis, water-soluble polymers, and concrete additives, particularly superplasticizers. His work has revolutionized construction materials, notably through high-performance water-reducing agents. Key contributions include the design of polycarboxylate-based superplasticizers recognized by the Hans Kühl Medal (2013) and Kondo-Daimon Award (2006).
Publications emphasize mechanisms of superplasticizers in concrete, including HLB value effects and air entrainment. His work bridges industry and academia, advancing sustainable construction technologies.
Part of the Advanced Construction Chemicals and Materials Focus Group at TUM-IAS, his research contributes to innovative building materials and environmental sustainability.
