Dr. Hightower's research centers on American politics with particular focus on political representation, interest groups, legislative studies, and polarization. His work examines how the structure and composition of issue spaces shape group formation, strategy, and advocacy within the broader policy ecosystem. His dissertation developed a theoretical framework demonstrating how interest groups interact formally and informally within policy ecosystems.
His publications reveal a consistent focus on interest group ecology and political representation across American political institutions. His recent work explores the population ecology of interest groups, particularly examining reproductive rights organizations and Evangelical group formation, while also investigating how American institutions shape political representation through redistricting and electoral geography.
