Trevor O'Brien serves as Lecturer in Educational Psychology, Inclusive and Special Education at Mary Immaculate College since 2012, coordinating the Post Graduate Diploma in Inclusive Special Education. His academic journey includes prior experience as a class teacher and special education teacher in Dublin and Cork primary schools, plus work with youth (15-21) at a Cork Youthreach center.
His research spans Student voice, Specific learning differences, Inclusive pedagogies, Social Justice in Education, Teacher professional learning, and Teacher identity. Analysis of his 24 research outputs (2022-2025) reveals dominant trends in adolescent mental health-religiosity intersections, LGBT+ teacher experiences in Irish primary schools, refugee student integration, and dyslexia support models. His work predominantly employs qualitative methodologies including Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis and Semistructured Interviews, with strong focus on Irish educational contexts.
Scientific recognition includes Scopus-indexed publications and media coverage from Galway Advertiser, Limerick Leader, and academic press (2023) regarding his mental wellbeing-religiosity research. He actively supervises PhD candidates Emma Margaret O'Sullivan and Emma Teahan, and engages in teacher education design/delivery at both initial and postgraduate levels. His professional activities include 39 conference presentations (2022-2024) on special education topics across Ireland and international venues like Milan.
